Friday Five: Top 5 current NFL helmets

I'm going to try and do a feature every Friday called the Friday Five, the top five something.
So to start it off right, I asked myself, what are my five favorite current NFL helmets? Honestly, the result suprised me, so, here they are from fifth to first with explanation why.

5. Steelers - awesome football helmet. Tough looking, tough feeling, and it pays homage to the steel industry, the life blood of Pittsburgh. It sticks to the required black and gold mandatory Pittsburgh sports team color scheme. Throw in the added bonus of only a decal on one side (hence the usage of the right facing helmets for this post), and it starts off the first five.

4. Rams - I think it's a requirement to choose this helmet, I mean, it started off the logo on the helmet era. Great colors (now that they aren't royal blue and yellow), and most importantly, it hasn't changed over the years. It's still like the first one was. Fantastic.

3. Packers - this... this right here... is football. Hasn't changed, still the same as it was in the first two super bowl wins.

2. Colts - I think this is my biggest suprise. It's such a great helmet, I love it. I shouldn't, this helmet just crushed the Broncos twice in a row in the playoffs, but it's classic, especially now that it doesn't have the blue face mask. I love how it didn't change when they moved from Baltimore to Indy. When I was younger, it always bothered me that they didn't turn the horse shoe 90 degrees clockwise to make a the horseshoe a "C" for Colts. Now that I see it though, I don't like it, and glad it's the way it is.

1.Bears - Mean. Classy. History. Tradition. That's a football helmet. I might have to buy the mini version.

Notice the theme? Old school. On that point, two honorable mentions for the top five (or... #'s 5 and 6 if you will): Chiefs and Cowboys.

While we're covering the topic of helemts, just a note: the Broncos will be wearing this decal to remember Darrent Williams and Damien Nash this season.

Have a great weekend. Catch you Monday.

Looking Colorado Over - the Grand Opening

The grand opening of looking Colorado over!

Quick background:

I started this blog for two reasons.

  1. I am beyond tired of the sad state of Colorado sports coverage, and decided to take matters into my own hands. Colorado sports is covered by one of two types of media: cranky old men that write about the sky falling every day, or younger ESPN catch-phrase wanna be's. Both turn me off, so where does that leave me? The national media. And what do we find there? Point number two for starting this blog.
  2. Call it what you want. East coast bias, Red-Sox/Yankees/Patriots/Celtics nation. I know more about those four teams than I do about any other team except the Colorado teams. Why? BECAUSE that's all I hear on ESPN and ESPN radio. What's their answer? More people are interested in those teams. Maybe be true, by sheer numbers, but you know what else? People are interested in other teams too. Ahhhhh the beauty of the internet!

So... as a good Capitalist, what's the result? Fill the void, fill the need. Boom, Looking Colorado Over.

My hope is that this can be a fun stop on your daily internet travels.

So, what's with the name? It's an homage to my grandpa, a former sports writer for the Colorado Springs Gazette. His column was called "Looking 'Em Over." My hope is that this blog can be just as successful as his column was.

What this blog is:

Primarily... Colorado sports. I know, it's a niche' market, but isn't that what the internet is all about? I figured a good time to start this would be now, right before the king of Colorado sports start... the Broncos.

I think we're in for some good times in Colorado sports. The Rockies are keeping it interesting into the last two months of the season. The Broncos are one of the best teams in the AFC, which automatically means they are one of the best teams in the NFL (yeah, I'm talking to you NFC!). The Avalanche are in for a resurgence. This is going to be fun times.

I'll also be blogging about some other interest: college sports, sports uniforms, fantasy sports, technology, great links, general news, movie reviews and maybe an occasional political rant.

Just a head's up: my primary love is the Avalanche, so there will be a heavy bias towards them.

What this blog isn't:

I'll just tell you right here and right now, I'm not going to be covering the Rapids. I don't care one bit for soccer (en futbol). I'm sure at one point I'll go off about why I dislike soccer. Oh, and most everyone that can speak English doesn't care about soccer either, so it's a win-win.

The NBA/Nuggets. I dislike the NBA about as much as I dislike soccer. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE basketball. The problem is, the NBA is not basketball. However, I am intrigued by Iverson and 'Melo, so I may be keeping an eye on the Nugs.

I don't swear, and don't ogle women. There are plenty of blogs that drop F-bombs, cover sports, cars, and beautiful women/cheerleaders. No shortage there, so why join a crowded marketplace?

OK, so that about covers it. Hope everyone finds this an enjoyable as I do.
